“Especially hunger is the order of the day killing people!”

„As the COVID-19 continue to struck world wide Sierra Leone is no exceptions,“ berichtet Joseph Jebila, Regionalsekretär beim YMCA.

„As we continue to fight two wars, especially hunger is the order of the day killing people,“ so Joseph Jebila.

‘AHA Regel’ heißt in Sierra Leone “Women”

Dank an ‘MÖWE’

Because of the lockdown caused by Corona, social life is very limited.

There is now good news for the YMCA Rahden from the partner association from Sierra Leone. Corona emergency aid could be started there with help from Rahden.
The YMCA Rahden has been on friendly terms with the YMCA Bo for 38 years. In addition to good, personal contacts, the focus is on promoting and financing a training project for young women. In difficult times, such as the Ebola epidemic or heavy rain events in recent years, the YMCA Rahden also tries to help with the current challenges caused by Corona. “As the COVID-19 continue to struck world wide Sierra Leone is no exceptions,” reports Joseph Jebila, regional secretary at the YMCA. As one of the poorest countries in the world, Sierra Leone is also suffering from the effects of Corona. The people in Sierra Leone not only have to fight against the virus, but also against the immediate economic consequences. Since many people work as day laborers, they only have what they earn each day to live. The government cannot raise state social assistance. “As we continue to fight two wars, especially hunger is the order of the day killing people,” said Joseph Jebila. Since there is no work and food prices are constantly rising, many do not know what to live on. Families and single mothers are particularly hard hit. It also happens that parents marry their young daughters in order to get the family through the crisis with the bride price, says Joseph Jibila, describing the existential needs of the population.
With the Corona emergency aid, rice, oil and maggi could now be made available to many families, so that daily food is provided for the next few weeks. Joseph Jibil is grateful that not only the members of the partner association from Rahden are helped, but also the whole region around Bo regardless of their religion or ethnic origin: “Our partners, the YMCA Rahden helped the Bo Community, YMCA Branches in Bo and the YMCA Pujehun Branch with food stuff and some preventive materials. ”This would strengthen cohesion among the population and the fight against Corona perceived as a task for society as a whole. Many of the recipients who have no contact with the YMCA were then very astonished when they were allowed to receive the relief supplies and could hardly believe it.
The YMCA Rahden would like to thank Joseph Jibila and his helpers for their commitment and dedication to ensuring that the many sacks of rice, canisters with oil and spices to supply the population could be distributed with the donations. In addition to the fight against hunger, Joseph Jibila is also concerned that the donations support the fight against corona infections in the population: “We have also started benefiting from COVID-19 awareness raising and sensitization.” Already during Ebola Epidemic, the YMCA informed the population about hygiene measures. This is how it is done now. In addition, containers for hygiene and disinfectants were distributed to the families and the AHA rules were repeatedly pointed out.
The YMCA Rahden also thanks the parish Rahden, the parish of Lübbecke and the regional church, represented by the “MÖWE” committee. “Without the generous support of the church, we would not have been able to finance this aid package like that,” said Hannah Zimmermann, chairwoman of the YMCA Rahden, who initiated the aid package.
